TUCSON, Ariz. (July 6, 2026) — The University of Arizona Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine (AWCIM) has appointed Denise Millstine, MD, as associate director of the Integrative Medicine Fellowship, the center's flagship physician training program and one of the world's leading educational programs in integrative medicine.

Millstine joins AWCIM following 13 years at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, where she served as director of the Section of Integrative Medicine and as medical director of the Office of Joy and Well-being. A board-certified internist and 2011 Integrative Medicine Fellowship graduate, she returns to AWCIM as faculty with a national reputation in women's health, integrative medicine, and narrative medicine. She credits the Fellowship with changing the way she practices medicine.

At Mayo Clinic, Millstine directed continuing medical education, co-directed the Society for Integrative Oncology's annual international conference, served as medical director of the Mayo Clinic Press Women's Health channel, and created the Read. Talk. Grow. podcast, which examines health through literature.

“Dr. Millstine brings the grounded perspective of a practicing clinician, along with advanced training in integrative and narrative medicine and women's health,” said Stephen Dahmer, MD, director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. “She recognizes that high-quality care rests not only on clinical expertise, but on the ability to listen deeply, communicate effectively, and build authentic partnerships with patients. These are core competencies we are committed to cultivating in every practitioner we train.”

As associate director, Millstine will help lead the Fellowship curriculum, mentor fellows, collaborate with faculty across the College of Medicine, and contribute to the continued growth of AWCIM's educational offerings in integrative medicine and whole-person health.

"I feel passionately about the field of integrative medicine and feel called to have a hand in continuing to define and expand it," Millstine said. "There is no better place to do that than through the center, by mentoring and guiding healthcare professionals as they build practices that reflect the best of integrative medicine."

Millstine's clinical and research interests include nonhormonal management of menopause, cancer support, women’s health, preventive medicine, whole person care, healthcare professional wellbeing, and care of the underserved.

Millstine also brings a specialization in narrative medicine, an approach that uses literature and storytelling to build understanding and empathy of health experiences, and plans to expand that programming at the College of Medicine.
