Wellness Experience
When I think of the Ironwood tree, I think of support systems, grounding and strength, and how these qualities are all interdependent. The Ironwood tree encourages us to feel supported by the earth and grounded. One way to connect to the earth is through the ancient tradition of shaking, often now called shaking the bones or dancing the bones.
To begin, stand in a neutral position, feet apart. Let your arms relax at your sides, relax your shoulders, and unlock your knees. Keep your head slightly bowed forward to open the space at the back of your neck. You can close your eyes or fix your gaze on the ground about a foot or two in front of you. I prefer my eyes closed.
Begin by creating a small bouncing or pumping motion up and down with both knees, while keeping your feet flat on the ground. While you shake, notice anything that's coming up. Let your arms and body shake out anything that arises. Do this in time to the music that you hear. Keep bouncing and shaking to the beats of the music. We will continue to shake for another minute.
Let yourself come back to a still position. Notice if you feel more relaxed, more energized, or both. Notice your feet and how grounded you may feel. This shaking practice is now in your toolbox to use anytime you need or want to notice your connection to the earth or to feel more supported and grounded.
