RELAX

Turpentine Bush | Ericameria laricifolia

Plants move water great distances without expending any energy. Water moves down a water potential gradient (from a region of high-water potential to a region of low potential. In this way no cellular energy is expended. Turpentine bush has a sedating effect on smooth muscles and on the central nervous system. In this way, the plant serves as both a model and a medium for relaxation! Traditionally, an application of the leaves has been used to treat convulsions and, when used topically, to relieve spasms.

Wellness Experience

Turpentine bush

The turpentine bush inspires a sense of relaxation. One of the best ways to relax is through guided imagery. Let's do a quick guided imagery. Make yourself comfortable and gently close your eyes. Now take a slow, relaxed breath in and out. Imagine yourself standing on a beach with your bare feet in the warm sand.

Let your toes wiggle into the sand and feel how the sand conforms to the shape of your feet and supports your whole body. Notice that there's a gentle breeze blowing soft air against your cheeks. As you let the breeze caress your face and the sand support your feet, Bring your attention to the sound of the waves regularly breaking on the shore.

As each wave recedes, you feel yourself relax. You find that your breathing mimics the pattern of the waves with each inhalation, Taking place as the wave breaks and each exhalation following the wave as it recedes back into the ocean. Let your breath follow the three more waves. In and out. And again. In and out. And finally one more. In and out. Now wiggle your toes and let the sand fall away. Feel the inside of your shoes and bring your awareness back to where you are standing or seated. When you are ready, open your eyes.
