John Mark, MD

Dr. Mark received his medical degree from the University of Kansas and completed a residency in pediatrics at Children's Mercy Hospital, University of Missouri, Kansas City. He continued his training in pediatric pulmonary medicine during his fellowship at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York. Dr. Mark is currently Board Certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonology. After his fellowship he became an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California. Dr. Mark then moved to the Central Coast of California in 1985 and in conjunction with Stanford University and the University of California, San Francisco, provided outreach pediatric pulmonary care from 1985 till 1999. During this time, he was the medical director at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz (85-92) and then at Natividad Medical Center (93-99). In both hospitals he established level 2 NICU and was responsible for inpatient education for the family practice residents while at Natividad.
Dr Mark in 1999 went to the University of Arizona to complete the first fellowship in Pediatric Integrative Medicine funded by the National Institute of Health. After this two-year research fellowship; Dr. Mark joined the Department of Pediatrics, Pulmonary Division at the University of Arizona as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in 2001. He then joined the faculty at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in July 2005 as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics and now is a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford. Dr. Mark has been utilizing different complementary and alternative health care practices in his patients with chronic pulmonary illnesses such asthma and cystic fibrosis for the last 20 years. He is especially interested in the mind/body approach to healing, trying to minimize medication and emphasizes such things as exercise, nutrition and some complementary therapies (message, acupuncture as examples).
He frequently speaks on the topics of using integrative medicine in respiratory disorders and the use of herbal remedies in patients with chronic pulmonary problems. Since joining the faculty at Stanford, Dr. Mark has started an exercise program for patients with cystic fibrosis. He is the Pediatric Fellowship Program Director for the Pulmonary Division, Associate Director for the pediatric residency program and is the Medical Director for the Respiratory Therapy Department as well as Case Management Departments at Packard Children's Hospital.
Dr. Mark has a special interest in infants and children with asthma-like problems. He started using complementary and alternative treatment modalities for these children with "sensitive" lungs over the last 10 years. He is studying children with chronic ear infections and their response to herbal and osteopathic treatments. He is also developing a study with children who have moderate asthma using relaxation techniques to evaluate their lung function a medication use. Dr. Mark is married to Ann Miya, a well know artist on the Central Coast of California. When not engaged in medicine he is generally out training for his next long distance run.
